From September 15th to October 15th, our nation celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month to observe and recognize our Latine* culture and the milestones and contributions of our community. The observation originated as a week-long celebration and was later extended by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to be celebrated over a full month. Rightfully so, as our U.S. Hispanic population reached 62.1 million in 2020, accounting for 19% of all Americans and making our community the nation’s second largest ethnic group, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
At Latinos United for Peace and Equity, our goal as a Latinx centric organization is to celebrate the hope and pursuit of Latine children, youth and families to live in healthy families, united communities, and just societies. We invite you to use this interactive calendar that showcases 31 ways in 31 days to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month. We hope that the resources within the calendar can guide you to not only discover the contributions of our community, but also learn about the many ways you can engage with our work and mission.
* Caminar Latino-LUPE seeks to be inclusive and fully reflect and promote the diversity of our communities throughout all its work. While we use terms such as “Latino/a,” Latine,” “Latinx,” or Hispanic in this product, we acknowledge the shortcomings of these terms to resonate with or encompass all the origins, identities, and populations of people they are, currently and have historically been, used to refer to. Our intent is to describe persons of Latino/a/@/e/x or Hispanic heritage, who identify as Hispanic or Latino/a/@/e/x, including indigenous, Brazilian, and other non-Spanish speaking people as well non-binary, gender non-conforming and gender-expansive people.
